Standard Pronunciation Engine

Features

  • Rule-based reading: Applies Korean pronunciation rules in a fixed order
    Liaison → H-assimilation → Coda neutralization → Tensing, with added nasal/N-L assimilation and special cases (e.g., ㄺ+ㄱ → ㄹ+ㄲ).

  • Step-by-step logs: Toggle between Full (see every intermediate form per pass) and Final only (clean output with romanization).

  • Multi-token input: Enter multiple words/phrases separated by spaces; each token is processed independently.

  • Romanization hint: Final result includes a compact Revised Romanization-style cue (e.g., 닭과 → 닥꽈 (dak-kkwa)).

  • Edge-case handling:

    • Double codas: only the second element liaisons; ㄶ/ㅀ drop and move ㄴ/ㄹ.

    • Palatalization before ㅣ (particles/suffixes): ㄷ/ㅌ → ㅈ/ㅊ.

    • ㅎ-assimilation to following ㄱ/ㄷ/ㅂ/ㅈ/ㅅ/ㄴ.

    • Nasal assimilation before ㄴ/ㅁ (합니다→[함니다], 국물→[궁물]).

    • L→N after m/ng/g/b codas (합리→함니, 식량→싱냥).

    • N/L assimilation (신라→실라, 칼날→칼랄).

    • Tensing: coda ㄱ/ㄷ/ㅂ/ㄹ + onset ㄱ/ㄷ/ㅂ/ㅅ/ㅈ → ㄲ/ㄸ/ㅃ/ㅆ/ㅉ, with liaison exceptions respected.

  • Built-in test set: One-click Sample Tests to sanity-check outputs (click again to undo).

How to Use

  1. Enter input: Type a word or short phrase in Korean (you can input several items separated by spaces).
    Examples: 합니다 / 국물 / 싶다 / 덮다 / 막자 / 깃발 / 국수 / 좋니 / 않아요 / 값이 / 넓어 / 넓이 / 닭과 / 밟아 / 읊어 / 여럿이 / 앞아

  2. Pick detail level:

    • Show step-by-step logs to see each rule pass, or

    • Final only for just the result + romanization.

  3. Run: Click Apply Rules (or press Enter) to generate the output.

    • The Results area prints intermediate snapshots (① Liaison, ② H-assimilation, ③ Coda neutralization, ③.5 Tensing, ④ Final) when in Full mode.

  4. Review outputs:

    • Check the final reading and the romanization below it.

    • Compare tokens side-by-side if you entered multiple.

  5. Try samples: Open Sample TestsRun sample tests to validate behavior on common patterns (toggle to restore).

  6. Reset: Click Clear to empty the input and results.

What You’ll Gain

  • Transparent pronunciation: See exactly why a spelling becomes a given reading, pass by pass.

  • Rule mastery: Internalize tricky areas—batchim neutralization, liaison of double codas, ㅎ-assimilation, palatalization, and tensing.

  • Faster teaching & checking: Instant demonstrations for class; no need to rewrite steps on the board.

  • Fewer errors: Spot and correct misconceptions (e.g., when tensing should not apply after liaison).

  • Confidence with real text: Apply the same pipeline to names, compounds, and particles without guesswork.
